Elementary Theatre Essentials

This unit introduces students to the foundations of theatre through imaginative play, storytelling, movement, and collaboration. Students begin by learning that theatre is something we create together. Through ensemble games and circle activities, they practice listening, taking turns, and supporting one another, while building confidence and a strong sense of community. Topics students will explore in this unit include experimenting with tableaus and pantomime, discovering how to tell stories without words using frozen pictures and expressive gestures. They are introduced to basic improvisation games, and they also learn how everyday objects and clothing can help create characters and settings. Students also learn simple stage directions (front, back, left, right) and how purposeful movement helps make storytelling clear. The unit concludes with a sharing performance, where students present fairytale scenes and demonstrate how they can use their voices, bodies, imagination, and teamwork to bring stories to life.
