High School Stage Essentials
Contributing Educator: Danielle Miller
This unit immerses high school theatre students in an advanced exploration of performance, design, directing, and collaboration. Building on foundational skills, students refine technique, deepen artistic thinking, and take greater ownership of the theatre-making process. The unit begins with ensemble development, strengthening trust, focus, and collaborative habits essential to a professional rehearsal environment. Students then explore visual storytelling through stage composition, examining how balance, levels, and spatial relationships shape meaning and guide audience attention. Through tableau and staging exercises, they develop an understanding of how stories can be communicated visually. Students expand their expressive range through physical theatre and improvisation, using movement, gesture, and spontaneous scene work to build character, relationships, and dynamic storytelling. Vocal training throughout the unit supports breath control, articulation, projection, and expressive delivery. Students also investigate directing and design, learning how conceptual vision, blocking, props, and scenic elements contribute to a cohesive production. Anchored by a study of The Bench by David Abbinanti, students continually apply their learning to the script. The unit culminates in a fully staged one-act performance in which students synthesize acting, directing, voice, movement, and design skills to bring the play to life through thoughtful collaboration and artistic intention.
